A severe teacher shortage hits Clermont County with January 4 exams yielding no applicants. About fifty emergency certificates issued as half the schools are led by inexperienced staff or veterans who left. Board and superintendents plan to extend the term to February to cover curricula and allow promotion.
Wartime letters from Irwin Kain and relatives detail life in France Belgium and Luxembourg with descriptions of drives bombardments and marches. The messages note army moves Armistice timing and hopes of homecoming as they recount life among soldiers and local towns.
Col Theodore Roosevelt died peacefully in his sleep at Sagamore Hill Oyster Bay on January 6. The cause is believed to be a blood clot in the lung after a New Year's rheumatism and sciatica attack. Funeral details were not yet arranged.
The government will sell nitrate of soda directly to farmers through the Clermont County Farm Bureau under the Food Control Act. Orders must be placed by January 26 and may be made through local committee members C. T. Brown Elmer Hunt A. P Roudebush J. H. Dawson and P. E. Yreton.
William H. Mehme a 25 year old machinist of Norwood was convicted under the married masher act and sentenced to a year in the Cincinnati workhouse by Judge Buchwalter. He had taken Miss Ethel Burns a 21 year old Norwood resident to Hamilton and married her while living with his wife and child. A Batavia arrest and conviction under the masher act is anticipated.
John B. Cover of Williamsburg Ohio was cleared of manslaughter by Municipal Judge Bell after a coroner's inquiry found no fault. Cover's auto struck Mrs Elizabeth Ennis of Walnut Hill last month. Enquirer notes friends' sympathy and upcoming dismissal.
Harold Demaris of Bethel, a conductor on the O G and P road freight train, had his foot mashed when he was attempting to board the train at Highland Park last Saturday. He was taken to the city hospital where amputation was considered.
The young people of Batavia plan a dance at the armory on Friday night January 10 with a saxophone trio. A basketball game, Amelia versus B H, is set for the same evening at 8 o clock. Admission is 16 cents.
Rev Murray Titus and wife depart Seaman for India to resume missionary duties after months in the United States. They travel via San Francisco with Mrs T’s parents. They sail January 11 for a trip of about two months and report being favored by their experiences and eager for continued service.
The War Chest Fund plans a memorial for Batavia Township war boys. Of 664 subscribers, 431 paid in full, 78 paid 50 percent or more, 98 paid nothing. About $11,000 was subscribed, $8,200 paid, $2,800 unpaid. Regular payers have until June 1 to settle.
The grand jury rose Tuesday afternoon after hearing five cases, examining 39 witnesses and ignoring one case. Indictments returned include Basie L. Henderson for grand larceny, Henrietta Cogleton for grand larceny, J. B. Rittenhouse for assault and battery, and Harry Campbell for failure to provide for minor children.

Max Moore and his wife live in the Ferguson building at Main Street. Last Thursday he went to dump the ash pan over the creek bank and tumbled to the water edge. He sustained injuries but kept his pipe and is reported to be recovering.
Russell Wyatt of New Richmond son of George Wyatt a tobacco buyer with years of experience will buy tobacco for Reynolds Co during the coming season at the Ripley and Georgetown warehouses. He has worked with his uncle Harry Ketcham in Kentucky tobacco business for several years.

Attorney Samuel E. Cornish of Milford, serving in the Ordinance Department overseas, writes to friend L. L. Harding and describes coldier life as a wonderful experience. He is anxious to resume the practice of law in Clermont county and many friends are glad to hear from him.
Jerry Price longtime Clermont county resident died at age 88 in Milford after living on the Price homestead most of his life. He leaves a widow and daughter Mrs. Nora Shaw Hill Eleanor. Funeral was held Monday at his late residence with interment in Greenlawn Cemetery Milford.
Disabled soldiers and sailors discharged from service may learn of government plans for civil re establishment including medical care in government hospitals. Compensation and family allowances continue during training via the Federal Board for Vocational Education. The Red Cross Home Service chapters provide up to date information and assist veterans and families in accessing benefits.
Citizens of Batavia township gather at the courthouse on the evening of January 16 to arrange the erection of a Soldiers Honor Roll Tablet and handle necessary preliminaries. All attendance from the township is desired.
