Senate Debates Texas Annexation and Cuba Negotiations

In Washington the Senate debated the Texas annexation as a slave state with Webster opposing and Calhoun and others supporting it. The measure passed the Senate by a large majority and was sent back to the House. Levy proposed opening negotiations with Spain for Cuba cession, with the resolution laid over. The House adjourned its business to elections for a chaplain.

Milburn Wins After Ballot Tally in House and Senate Adjourns

On the House ballot Milburn led with 35 votes on the first ballot and was elected after the third ballot. The Senate passed the Texas annexation actions and confirmed ministers and judges while adjourning for Christmas. The House printed 16 000 maps for the President's message and public documents as petitions oppose Texas annexation.

Temperance Convention Held in Columbus 1845

The Ohio State Temperance Society met at the First Presbyterian Church Columbus on December 17 1845 with Gov Bartley presiding. Delegates were registered by a three member committee and attendees could join by pledge or as visiting members, amid debates on licensing laws and measures to eradicate temperance evils.

Temperance Convention Endorses Stricter License Proposals

A late nineteenth century temperance assembly endorses total abstinence and stricter liquor laws. Resolutions call for preaching on abstinence, mass meetings in multiple cities, opposition to grain distilling, and memorializing the legislature to restrict licenses.
