Will Spurel of Elk Lick Valley tested his seed corn and found one sprouting grain out of a hundred in white corn while yellow corn all sprouted. He blames heavy freezing for germination loss. Local seed price is five dollars and Clermont county reportedly has enough seed for planting. Those who skip testing risk poor stands.
The cannery industry appeals to growers to plant abundant tomatoes claiming high prices and federal demand. They urge cooperation with farmers to boost food production as government plans require more canned goods for war effort.
The I O F Hills District No 64 plans the 99th anniversary at Marathon Ohio on April 27 1918. Executive committee members from each lodge met in Owensville to arrange the program with Allen Glavey of Batavia as a member. The 100th anniversary will be in Batavia in 1919 with a hoped for strong crowd and extra entertainment. Batavia lodge is on the boom with degrees conferred nightly.
Batavia schools are actively forming War Saving Societies with three already organized and more in consideration. Arrangements are completed for organization and activity continues.
The Batavia Public Affairs Board met last Friday at the Batavia Foundry Company office. Charles Seyler was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Chas Mitchell's resignation. Gus Wilkie was elected president and Chas Seyler secretary. M. F. Ross remains the third member. Bills were allowed and other business transacted.
Boles and brother from Bata via purchased about 160000 pounds of tobacco in Clermont County and Indiana. They headed to Cedar Grove Indiana to collect their purchase. The sale fetched 28 cents a pound with a handsome profit expected. Mr Boles is noted as a keen market judge of the local weed.
Obituary honors Thomas Corwin Teal born May 1 1847 died February 21 1918 a long serving Clermont County sheriff deputy and public official married Martha Patchell and father of four with a grandson surviving. He led with cheerfulness and public service, active in church and Masonic orders and supported World War I.
County agents in Ohio urge farmers to test at least 100 ears for germination accuracy and report seed conditions. They note root growth precedes shoots, warn against relying on few ears, and cite high variability in tests. Demonstrations for oats smut treatment and a new dry method are planned. Batavia agent invites samples.
Deerfield Club No. 61 held two meetings last week after a weather postponement. February 1 program featured Our Organization with Mrs. Davidson hostess and Mrs. Prather authoring a paper. A refined Washington Birthday party hosted by Mrs Alf Marchal at her Owensville home honored nieces Misses Rentsler and Marchal. The living and dining rooms showed narcissus and jouquils with flags for a festive touch. Carl Miller led the grand march with Miss Lora Rentsler as guests enjoyed singing, dancing, and a buffet luncheon among intimate friends.
Deputy collector W. H. Hunter will be at the Batavia auditor’s office daily through March 1 to accept individual income tax returns. Married couples with $2000+ income must file. single filers with $1000+ income also mandated. If not filing, contact the Cincinnati Internal Revenue Collector.
The funeral for Thos C Teal, who died after a paralysis stroke, was held at the M E church with Batavia Masonic lodge presiding. Senator W F Roudebush delivered a life history, Rev Wilson and Rev Burdsall officiated, and Mrs Chas Belt sang two selections. Buried at Greenlawn cemetery Milford.

Secretary Shaw of the State Board of Agriculture says cherry peach and plum buds in Southern Ohio are nearly destroyed by January blizzards. Northern counties may still have about 10 percent life. Warm weather could awaken remaining buds if any survive.

Thomas Denny a 73 year old farmer from near Leesburg Highland County was killed by a premature dynamite blast while blowing stumps. He bent over the hole to light the fuse when it exploded, throwing him about 15 feet. He died within minutes from a broken neck and fractured skull.
Local farmers report heavy pig losses from the recent cold wave. Surviving pigs are less desirable and prices may rise. The government calls on farmers to maximize pork production for the army, while town residents plan to raise two pigs this season.
J H Easley of Miami Township sold his 183 acre farm to J A Davis of Hamilton. Easley made a nice profit and has rented a nearby farm. He has three sons likely to be drafted for Uncle Sam.
