Rives Denounces Sub-Treasury Bill in Congress Speech

In Washington February 5 1838 Mr Rives delivered a strong critique of the Sub-Treasury Bill. He argued it lacks healing effect and widens dangers by demanding gold and silver revenue from a country with no currency but paper. He also dismissed the distinction between government and people currency as unsatisfactory and warned of growing opposition reflected in Northern and Southern votes.
