Batavia Methodists Dedicate Magnificent New Church

The Batavia Methodist congregation celebrated the dedication of a new Gothic church built by Joseph F. Hanold. Funds raised to clear a $4,400 debt surpassed the goal, totaling $4,461.68 with early gifts of $200, $100 and others, led by Rev. Dr. Payne and Revs. Spahr Lease and Cheney. The building features Blairville brick, freestone caps, stained glass, a slate roof, and a handsome belfry, with future interior improvements planned by the ladies of the Guild.

Meeting of Grand Committee at Batavia Hill District

The Grand Committee of the Hill District met at the I O O F hall in Batavia on Monday February 20 with a large attendance of Odd Fellows from Clermont and surrounding areas. The session approved a report opposing the circular on age based dues and heard remarks from leaders including Dr Holden and M J W Holter.

Among the Breakers at Amelia Club Declined in Split

Miss Cora Simmons returns to Mt. Carmel after visiting Mayme Robinson. Amelia Literary Club’s Among the Breakers was a decli ed success with a strong cast from Clermontville Batavia Mt. Holly and Cincinnati guests. The Amelia string band earned praise for music with notable attendees including Peter Ross Mason Charles McNeil and Capt. D. C. Elliott.

Death of Mrs George P Moore in Batavia village

Mrs. Kate Murphy Moore died suddenly at the family residence on North street Batavia at 9 o clock Friday evening after weeks of illness. She was born November 2 1851 near Laurel and moved to Batavia at age 12. The Last Deer of the County

Col M A Leeds recalls hunting the county’s last deer in 1856 near Franklin schoolhouse. He pursued the buck for three days, finally shooting a four year old animal on Clover Creek at George Nichols’ land. He earned his mother’s $100 and notes no later deer sightings have reached him.
