Hon. Cyrus A. Sulloway of New Hampshire attacks civil service in a fiery speech praised for exposing hypocrisy and patronage. He denounces pensions for Confederate ties and calls for immediate unconditional repeal, urging Republicans to act next November. Seth Brown and others join in backing the effort to dismantle the system.
A Cleveland editorial derides Representative Parker of Cuyahoga for a bill to appoint three physicians per county at 1000 dollars salary to decide marriage licenses. It warns the plan would bar many marriages and mocks adding qualifications and absurd criteria while lampooning the legislator as dangerous to the Legislature.
Prominent politician and journalist Joseph P. Smith died in Miami on February 5 1898 after a long career in Adams county Ohio and Indiana politics and national service. He served as editor and campaign manager and rose to director of the Bureau of American Republics before retiring to Florida. Burial was in Urbana with many politicians attending.

Rev Jones of Second M E reports joy at souls won, noting 29 conversions.
Judge Markley of Brown and Judge Davis of Clermont appointed committees to draft rules for court conduct. Brown members are G Bambach W D Young J R Moore Rufus F Fite and David Tarbell Clermont members are John Parrott Louis Hicks and T V Breeding Parrott named chairman and Young secretary A Brown Clermont sub committees draft rules for joint revision and court approval to ensure uniform business practices across both courts.
The new Bata via postmaster, born in 1855, will assume duties upon commission arrival. His career spans work as a clerk, hotel messenger, Urbana hotel clerk, agent for White Sewing Machine Co, and bicycle sales and repair. He also ran for county auditor in 1893 as a Republican and currently serves as corporation and township treasurer.
Henry White of Georgetown faced arrest for swindling old soldiers by claiming to secure pensions. Commissioner Adler found he merely stated he would use influence with Secretary Sherman to gain pension increases. No evidence he posed as a pension examiner. Southern Ohio press coverage urged prompt notice of his acquittal.
Dayton judge Justin last week declared the Smith anti lynch law unconstitutional in a Urbana case seeking $5,000 damages from Champaign county for a lynching. The ruling cites encroachment on the judiciary and lack of due process, with appeal expected and critics calling the law unfair and sentiment driven.
Removal of the temporary Indian Hill bridge by Bracket Bridge Company isolates Newtown and Plainville residents. A wagon running between Mil ef ord and Goshen was robbed of six hams last Thursday. The stolen goods were traced and recovered at the Peebles homestead two miles east of Milford. George Tackon, a colored tenant on the property, was arrested as the thief and will be prosecuted.
Within the Matt Fouthwe ks four leading citizens of Amelia have died from paralytic stroke. The reported death for Jasper N. Robinson, a pioneer of Amelia and long time undertaker, occurred on February 5. He was 75 years old and widely known, leaving many friends.
A bill to reduce county officers fees by 33 percent, drafted by Rep Kerner of Mercer, faces House debate today. Agricultural members oppose it and oppose the McCormick traveling auditors bill and repeal of the Workman school law. The measure would set salaries for officers and place fee revenues in the county treasury, though its chances are doubtful.
The Williamsburg bank safe jammed last Friday as its combination failed. A Houston expert tightened the back, manipulated the mechanism, and opened the safe on Saturday afternoon. No money was missed and normal business resumed.

The measure differs from Representative Neil by moving the current first district judges to Adams Brown Butler Clermont Clinton Fayette Highland Montgomery and Warren counties, with three new judges in Hamilton. The bill designates Hamilton as the first circuit and reorganizes the other counties into the ninth circuit.
Friends mourn for George and Mrs Sinks as Mrs A W Calloway aged about 18 dies instantly during a visit to her mother in law. She had felt better moments before and planned a walk, but collapsed at the door and died before aid could arrive. Interment set for Connersville. Also notes the sale of George Mount farm to Norman Sapp for 4.5% and 115 acres tile drained land with large barns. Sapp is brother of Commissioner Reea Sapp.
