Corn Boy's Trip to Washington Described by James Patchell

A December 4 1916 corn contest train carried 31 Ohio winners to Pittsburgh then to Washington D C with 900 attendees. The group toured the Capitol, White House area, and monuments, hearing speeches by notable figures including Senator Pomerene, Harding, Baker, and Secretary Houston during an eventful three day excursion.

Bethel Board of Trade Distributes Townwide Prizes

Bethel business men formed the Bethel Board of Trade to boost the town. They advertised in local papers with premiums and coupons for guesses. On December 19 prizes were awarded including a silverware set a ton of coal a box of chocolates a kitchen cabinet and a barrel of flour.

Golden Wedding Celebrated in Bantam by the Channells

The Bantam holiday highlight was the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Channell. Despite cold weather, 28 guests attended the celebration. only one of the original 14 guests returned. Brother Robert Huggins was among the few survivors. Guests brought many gifts as the couple received many beautiful presents and well wishes for many returns of the day.

Pathe of Bethel Undergoes Major Surgery

A. T. Pathe of Bethel, connected with the Cincinnati Shoe Co., who had been ill for some time, underwent an operation last week by three Cincinnati surgeons. He is 60 years old and many friends wish for his speedy recovery.

Sunday School surprise for R Coyle at Teal home

Members of E. C. Ely and T. C. Teal Sunday School classes surprised R. Coyle last Wednesday evening. They gathered at Mr. Teal's home and proceeded to the Coyle residence to present their mission, ending the evening merrily with best wishes for Mr. Coyle.

Tobacco crop draws attention of growers in market

The tobacco crop on the market attracts growers as Henderson Kentucky last week paid 20 cents, the best price yet. Producers wonder why they sold at the first offer for half today’s price and vow not to repeat the mistake.

Horns celebrate 25th wedding anniversary near Batavia

Mr and Mrs Henry Horn observed their twenty fifth anniversary last Sunday at their home south of Batavia. About forty friends and relatives attended and refreshments were served. The Courier extends best wishes for many more years of happiness.

Auditor Davis Dead at 63 in New Richmond

John W. Davis former Clermont county auditor died at his sister Mary Robertson’s home in New Richmond after a period of ill health. Funeral set for Thursday at 10 30. He was a prominent local figure and brother to Judge Davis. At Columbus state bar exam last week three Clermont men passed among 116, Calvin Cramer John N Gatch and Loren Gatch.

Holiday Wedding in Mt Holly Unites John Bissantz and Jessie Drake

John Bissantz and Miss Jessie Drake were married by Rev. George Bauer in the Mt. Holly home of the bride last Wednesday at 1 30 p.m. About 75 guests attended as the couple planned to reside on the Will Crane homestead farm. The ring ceremony was performed and the bride decorated the house with help from friends. The Bissantz brothers John and Carl will manage the two farms next season.

Coal Men on Ohio River Hit by Low Water and Ice

Coal operators face delays on the Ohio River due to low water and ice blocks. Last week barges stranded on Ironton bars sank while others collided, causing damage. Some coal was rescued as floating barges stabilized the channel temporarily, with river shipments valued at about $20,000 and prices in Cincinnati dipping as a result.

Wellington Dickinson, age over 84 and longtime Odd Fellow in Clermont county, was buried Monday after services at the Odd Fellow Temple conducted by Rev. J. J. Hawk. He had been a member of Mistletoe Lodge for over 52 years and operated a Bathiav photograph gallery years ago, leaving many friends. Burial took place at Green Mound cemetery.

West Union Masonic Lodge to mark 100th anniversary

Winter fuel trouble remedy for gasoline engines

Batavian Man Dies in Des Moines Stroke Victim

Lester Maitland, eldest son of Mrs. Laura Lewis of Batavia, died in Des Moines Iowa on Sunday from a paralysis stroke. His remains were buried there Tuesday as the Red Men group he belonged to conducted his funeral arrangements.

Columbus officials announce D. S. Humphrey of Cleveland elected President of the Ohio Good Roads Federation on Monday. He succeeds Jesse Taylor of Jamestown who died recently. Miss Lillian Jordan of near Fal mouth Kentucky proves herself an expert Burley tobacco raiser. Last year she planted a patch in her father's garden yielding 590 pounds for 102.36 dollars, about four dollars per day of work. Christmas School Exercises Across Denominations

The Methodist and Presbyterian Sunday schools held Christmas exercises Sunday evening with large audiences. U B German Sunday school followed Saturday evening, the Second M E school on Sunday, and Baptist and African M E on Christmas night. A treat was given to scholars after the programs. Christmas mass was held at Holy Trinity Church Monday morning.
