Prominent Citizen Kearns Dies After Brief Illness in Amelia

Charles Cyrus Kearns aged 68 of Amelia died at his home on Thursday after a short illness. He once practiced law in Batavia, served two terms as prosecutor, and eight terms in Congress from the Sixth District.Widow Philena P. Kearns survives. Services led by Rev. Hazelwood with tributes from Hon. Charles Hard and Hon. C. Ellis Moore. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers named from Batavia, Amelia, and surrounding towns. The community mourns the passing of a respected public figure.

Tax Rates And Schools In Clermont County

The Sun article misstates school taxes in Clermont County. The average school rate is 11.62 mills, with operating school levies at 8.99 mills and state aid at 2.65 mills, totaling 6.60 mills not half the total rate. Local voters set bond and extra levies for new buildings or state aid eligibility, and most districts have not raised beyond 6.60 mills by outside authorities. The county would lose substantial state aid if rates dropped.

Immunization Drive Immunizes 152 Children in Williamsburg

The County Board of Health completed immunizing 152 children at Williamsburg Consolidated Schools against diphtheria. In the past two months Williamsburg township reports seven diphtheria cases with one death. The County Health Commissioner and Public Health Nurse conducted the campaign at no cost.

Brother Shot Over Tobacco Money Dispute

Eugene Garrison aged 21 confesses to shooting his brother James four times with a bulldog .38 revolver over tobacco money division. James wounded and hospitalized after the Thursday evening incident in Batavia. Sheriff Roberts and deputies made the arrest. no charges filed yet while outcomes of wounds determine action.

State Aid Received by County Schools

County Superintendent BH W Pattison reports that the state has sent 27100 in aid to several school districts in the county. This amount is about half of the deficit for the first half of the school year. The timing of remaining funds is not yet known.

Musical at Co. Home Brightens County Inmates

Inmates at the County Home enjoyed a musical program last night presented by Miss Elizabeth Walker of Batavia with the Mt. Carmel school choir assisting. The German numbers delighted an elderly couple unable to understand English and the evening was described as very enjoyable.

Large crowd attends land appraisement meeting in Batavia

In Batavia last Saturday Clermont county property holders protested the real estate appraisement raised by the appraisers. The County Farm Bureau led by Dave Roberts sponsored the meeting at the town hall which overflowed. A five member committee was formed to meet the State Tax Commission seeking a reduction though the current appraisement stands for now. Local officials note comparable cuts in Hamilton county and expect similar treatment for Clermont. Word from Columbus said the state approved the present appraisement and it will not be reopened until next year.

City Man Fatally Shot During Hunting Near Loveland

Fred van Steinwebr, 45, of 2227 Grandin Road Cincinnati, was shot in the heart Friday while climbing a fence during an annual hunt near Loveland. He died within minutes. Coroner Joseph Curliss ruled death accidental from a self inflicted gunshot. Survived by a wife and two children. body moved to Taft's Funeral Home Loveland.

Farm buzz saw accident costs worker two fingers

Brunk and several men operated a buzz saw near Nicholsville to cut firewood. Brunk stood too close and lost two fingers on his right hand and injured two others. Dr. J. W. Mott of Amelia summoned, then Dr. Colburn amputated the fingers and dressed the hand. He attempted to saw several small limbs at once. Harry fared poorly. He is recovering.

Farm Fire Destroys Barn and Crops in Ohio Township

A. J. Arnold lost his barn and tobacco crop to a fire last Thursday in Ohio township. The loss, about 3500, was partly insured. East Hill Farm Women's Club held its December 10 meeting at Mrs. Stralow's home with 12 members and guests, featuring games and refreshments. An oyster supper followed on December 12 at Mrs. Gus Goff’s home with 4 guests and members, sharing sandwiches or pie and club oysters. cards were played later.
