A grieving speaker laments the death of a dear child named Willie. The poem contrasts the child’s bright presence with sorrow and describes the sudden loss as a spoiler that bowed the head of a pretty flower.
In spring 1799 we kept three sheep in a four square rail pen to protect them from wolves. Wolves killed some sheep as grazing expanded and wolves grew scarcer by 1804. I recount encounters with wolves, an early panther sighting in 1806, and close calls with a dog during a wolf attack.
The reminiscence recalls wolves near a field and a dog hissed to approach a fence. A she bear and cub are seen crossing a river, shots kill the cub, and the old bear is later found. A wolf encounter near turkeys ends with a near miss as a woodsman fires high. The piece ends with a note on newspapers aiding childhood learning and parental duties.
An 1859 small scale Maine experiment sowed nearly a quart of seed from two heads on May 22 a ground of eight aquane rods. Harvested Sept 18 produced 300 lbs of fodder and 60 quarts of credit weight hay. About 40 bushels of seed and two tons fodder per acre derived from plaster manure. Ground previously grew potatoes. He recounts a farcical gallery of camp life, wives, and rough jokes, with crude impressions of polygamy and Mormon customs. An old-time narrator recounts fleeing Sal Lake after a chaotic scene at a tavern. Mor Monnesges and a crowd claim free admission as a “Revelashun” disrupts the show, with the narrator defending himself and exiting with his caravan. The piece ends with a crude portrait of Sal Lake and its inhabitants.
A preacher urges revival with parables of logs and rivers showing how religion spreads. He repeats blessings for the faithful and warns backsliders while humor and regional expressions color the tale. Interspersed sayings illustrate love, hope, and faith in everyday life.
