A letter from Dusvalle Iowa in 1850 describes Dubuque as a terraced river town with a bluff and a three mile riverfront strip ideal for growth. It notes eight churches, several schools, two flour mills with more nearby, and a heavy river trade. The harbor needs costly improvements to unlock prosperity. population exceeds 4000 with a mix of Southern and New England emigrants. Government offices include the Surveyor General and land office, with Dubuque home to state and federal legislators and a strong bar and medical corps.
A letter describes Dubuque nearby farmland with rich soil and crops, noting corn yields of 40 to 65 bushels per acre, pumpkins and potatoes, scarce apples, and scenic river bluffs. It closes with seasonal musings and hopes for future correspondence.
A colossal glass and iron structure planned for the 1851 London Exhibition will cover 752,832 square feet with 21 acres of exhibiting space. It rests on 3,300 cast iron columns, uses 900,000 square feet of glass, and features a 1,818 foot central avenue and a 408 by 72 foot transept housing trees and a ridge and valley roof.
Benjamin Hardinge of Cincinnati proposes coating iron columns and pilasters with variegated enamel resembling marble and gems such as agate chalcedony and jasper. He suggests applying liquid silicates to glass to create translucent prism like colors, a durable finish claimed to be inexpensive and hard to file away.
