The account recalls Col. Fremont and Col. Benton crossing the Cohatope Pass in midwinter 1853 54 facing a severe season with four inches of snow on the level. They climb a snow covered mountain endure starvation guard animals in the summit camp and resort to horse flesh and entrails as rations. A daguerreotype companion Carvalho describes the dire conditions and the cannibalistic survival measures used by the party and Delawares.
The narrative describes Col. Fremont's exploration party enduring extreme cold and snow. Men melt snow for drinking water and survive on horse meat for fifty days while foraging and trudging over steep, barren terrain. One member nearly freezes. rescue efforts succeed as Fuller is saved with help from Delawares. Col. Fremont faces a rare moment of weakness as the march continues toward the Green River.
