Aug distribution credited to townships and corporations for road and common school purposes is ready. An array of figures shows taxpayers how their money is spent with amounts due to each township for local services and education.
Gen B R Brown of Zanesville reports to the G A R committee in Columbus that President McKinley will revoke Hoke Smith devised pension rulings. The committee says Democratic rules should end under a Republican administration and expects a change within ten days, to be presented at Philadelphia next week.
Miss Rachel Bigony and Rev. T Edmund Prall were married at Miss Lizzie White’s Warren Street home by Rev. Edmund Burdsall. Mrs Prall, a longtime county teacher, and Mr Prall, a Pacific Missouri M E Church pastor, receive many fine gifts and plan western residence after a celebratory week in this vicinity. Mrs Mollie Rosinson of Williamsburg visits Mrs Tilda Baum this week.

In Higginsport William Snyder is killed by John Donald after a prior fatal clash with Donalds. The incident follows the prior killing of Mayor Charles Halfhill by John Donald, who was acquitted on self defense. The Donalds fled with weapons as a marshal pursued, sparking mob tensions and threats of lynching. Snyder leaves a wife and three children.
The 1898 legislature set Brown County officer salaries, proposing annual costs far lower than Clermont under the fee system. Clermont spent $10,797.40 more in 1897 and $7,229.82 more in 1898 than Brown would have under the new law. Brown County is debt free. Clermont carries $160,000 in bonds. Voters urged to save at least $8,000 annually by adopting the Brown plan to reduce taxes and improve roads.
The Knights of Pythias built Highland Memorial Hospital in Springfield from Batavia buff brick at a cost of 4000 dollars. Erected by Highland Lodge K of P of Cincinnati, dedication planned for September 4. The bricks showcase Batavia plant quality boosting local business. Emory Anderson of Elloe grocery was ill last week.
James Albert Baum age 30 died Tuesday morning at 1 at his mother's Batavia home after long illness. Born in Batavia he spent 20 years in active work in many states including Hutchinson Kansas where he led the fire department. He later worked for Peck Williamson Heating Ventilating Co for seven years. He returned to Batavia about eighteen months ago to engage in the coal trade. Survived by his mother three brothers and one sister funeral services Friday at 10 am at the house with burial in Union Cemetery under Batavia K of P lodge auspices.
James N. Hutchins of Williamsburg, a 51 year old steam mill owner and craftsman, was instantly killed by a lightning strike while at work in his office near a locust tree. The accident occurred during a thunderstorm as current traveled from the tree to the building and through a nearby coil of wire. his death ends a self made career in carpentry and wood work, leaving a wife, two daughters, and a mourning family.
The Secretary of State reports 4 554 divorce suits filed in the year ending June 30 1899 bringing total docket to 7 445 with 5 217 granted and 48 refused. Pending and undisposed cases stood at 2 891 on July 1 1899. Adultery by husband and wife, absence and neglect, extreme cruelty, habitual drunkenness and fraud are listed as grounds.
Batavia hosts Boston in a baseball game with Batavia victory 21 to 14. Batteries were Livengood Ashburn and Carter for Batavia while Spar Combs Fetter and Apgar pitched for Boston. Edenton visits Batavia Sept 2 and Bethel on Sept 4, closing the season. Joan Funn of Williamsburg transacted business here Friday.
The Clermont County Teachers Institute concluded a week long session in New Richmond with high praise for hospitality in the Valley City. Readouts highlight round tables on English Civics Pedagogy Geography and Literature, notable lectures by Supt Haupert Dr Shaeffer and others, and a vote selecting Felicity as host town for next year.
The 15 year old son of Herman Soldier was fatally shot last Thursday while hunting two miles east of Williamsburg. Accompanied by a boy named Brose, he climbed a fence and the gun discharged, the charge tearing through his head and killing him instantly.
The 28th annual meeting of the Ohio Mexican Veterans Association will be held in Columbus on Tuesday September 5 1899 with headquarters at the Neil House. M Jamieson of Batavia is president and James M Smith of Newark is secretary. All comrades are urged to attend and may ride the Ohio State Fair special fare. Historical note shows 11268 soldiers and sailors enlisted in the war with Mexico. about 9700 survive, mostly aged 70 or older.
Freight traffic on the P. and W. road is heavy causing Williamaburg furniture factories to fail to receive cars. Dealers lack capacity as producers have more orders than can be filled. The railroad cannot supply enough cars, and the congestion will likely persist this year as farm produce increases shipments.
Bruce Judd of Amelia received a second lieutenant commission after meritorious service with the Sixth U S Regiment San Juan and Santiago. The obituary notes Judd as a bright, intelligent young man with fine physique and promise as an officer. The Oblocavary annual reunion is planned for Loveland on September 14.
