In Clermont County Republicans hold primaries to choose delegates and alternates for the county convention at Batavia with state convention goals in Dayton. The piece denounces a rival faction as corrupt pirates and urges true Republicans to elect delegates representing the party’s best interests.
In Hamilton County probate court Judge Malsbarry ruled Margaret Harenger's will should be probated in Clermont County where she resided in New Richmond. The will limits his share to legal rights and seeks recovery of 1200 dollars loaned earlier. A second will reportedly favors Major J. B. Wallace, while another claimant questions validity.
Batavia showcases completed pavements electric lights water works and a new court house as it grows into a more attractive county capital with factories homes and shaded streets inviting people to relocate and enjoy a warmer climate and improved amenities.
Conductor Brant of the O R and C road died instantly while switching for a circus train at Sardinia last Saturday. Brant fell under the engine after his foot tangled with rails, his head severed and legs crushed. Brakeman Ruark of the N and W road lost an arm in Williamsburg, a train lurch throwing him between cars. Dr Hines treated him and he was sent home to Portsmouth.
Flooding along East Fork Tuesday devastated Happy Hollow with hundreds of dollars in losses. Joseph Pierson reports $900 in damage to his property, Louis Gordon loses crops, and the road becomes impassable. The C. and C. Traction trestle and 100 feet of fill near Greenlane cemetery are swept away, leaving 100 feet of track useless.
King Gold Coin a 1000 pound Jersey Duroc hog from the Warren county infirmary farm is the herd chief among 75 on the county farm. The two year old animal was sent to Des Moines Iowa for display at the state fair this week. Also reported are calls by West Loveland colored citizens for a colored teacher with Miss O Banion a five years certificate among applicants.
Florence Carter aged 16 died at her father William Carter’s home Friday morning August 24 due to consumption. She was a beloved member of her circle of friends. Funeral services were held at the Second M E Church Sunday morning with a sermon by Rev J H Love.
Henry Reybold of Milford, a carpenter, fell from a scaffold last week and sustained serious injuries. He was admitted to Dr Spencer's private Milford hospital, renowned as one of the state's finest, and is now on the road to recovery. Reybold is the son in law of Charles Robinson of this place.
Batavia township school board will meet in the township room on the 8th proximo at 1 o'clock, replacing the previously scheduled date. All teachers employed by the board are urged to attend on the new date without fail.
Postmaster Dennison will examine about 50 applicants for new rural routes. Candidates answer questions on transporting mail along routes. successful appointees receive life-time billets with $700 yearly pay and 15 days paid leave. Exams occur in the schoolhouse with non rigid testing.
A public appeal questions William C Bishop's integrity and fitness to lead the Republican party. The piece cites remarks at a State Central Committee meeting claiming Bishop sold party secrets and admitted he does not pretend to be honest in politics. It urges Republicans to attend Saturday primaries to choose trustworthy leadership and rid the party of a possible boss.
Joseph W. Eyler died in his sleep on Friday night August 17 1906 after months of illness. Born in 1847 he learned printing in West Union and founded the People's Defender at age 18. For 16 years he led the Georgetown News Democrat, a leading county paper, and was known as a fair fearless writer active in public enterprise.
Octogenarian Mrs Colin P Godfrey dies at her daughter Mrs Minnie McKay home in Owensville on Friday August 10 1906 aged 81 years observed by local residents and family.
The State fire marshal warns about deadly hazards from telegraph and trolley wires not to be touched. The warning notes birds on lines can die if contacting another wire and cites a housewife killed when a clothes line wire was struck by lightning. Storms and moisture worsen insulation breakdown and risk.
Lebanon to host the Sixth District Democratic congressional convention next Tuesday with six to eight candidates rumored. Clermont county will pick 42 delegates at the courthouse next Saturday afternoon, with a 203-member convention strength. Lebanon touted as the valley’s prettiest city and the opera house chosen as the venue.
Work on city pavements is set to resume September first after a delay due to legal issues. The contractor met with council and will start Monday on Main from Market to Third and both sides of Main, Market, and Third from Main to Broadway, using the available funds and good weather, with completion expected in spring.
