The daring rescue by engineer Tom Kyle and Larry’s escape avert disaster and Waterman’s death, after which Larry marries Annie Clark and rises to lead a grand passenger train.
A letter from Captain Atkins of the Edward Lee reports a Spanish vessel firing on his whaler near Cuba. The ship escaped after a grapeshot exchange, prompting Atkins to seek new grounds and extend the voyage by about a year. Wages have fallen sharply, and provisions are being arranged at the Western Islands.
A San Francisco hotel tale recounts a bearded Texas visitor who pays two days ahead with a counterfeit fifty. the clerk shows him to a room but later learns the fifty is fake. The guest vanishes, leaving the staff stunned as tension erupts over the fraud.
A selection of nineteenth century social guidance covering behavior toward men and guests, dress and manners, interaction with servants, and warnings about propriety in public settings. It notes that many social strictures apply to women and lists cautions on etiquette from dining to calling, with a final statistic on railroads in receivership.

Report from Cologne describes a farmer trying to burn Colorado beetles by sowing a ten inch deep bed of tan bark, soaking with kerosene, and lighting it. The beetle crawled from the fire, climbed the fence, and delivered a witty remark about the boss weather for corn.
