A Harmonious County Convention nominates a ticket for an October election. The assembled delegates report a successful day and pledge unity, with defeated candidates shaking hands and promising not to strike colors over lingering ambitions.
A calm Saturday Republican convention at the county courthouse nominated Thomas Brown of Batavia township forRepresentative and Thomas Brown honored with “old man” cheers. John Fishback of Franklin won the treasurer post unanimously while G W Holmes of Goshen captured the Commissioner seat after four ballots. Judge Hulick was bypassed and E B Holmes backed but declined.
The article profiles Billy Carroll, a life-term inmate in the Ohio penitentiary for murder in Brown County, noting questions of his innocence. It reports his solitary confinement record, the 1867 Batavia trial, and affidavits from Peter McCormick and John Benton suggesting Carroll may be innocent. Carroll describes self made inventions and a new identity E. W. Smith, with attorney Henry C. Noble preparing to petition the Governor.
Special to the Commercial Gazette: John Cross Jr a Pierce township farmer near Locust Corner fifteen miles from Cincinnati was arrested on a Governor’s requisition from Arkansas for netting fish without a license. He paid $90 to the sheriff as annual non resident license but was indicted and sent to Clarington awaiting further proceedings.
Telegram from Pierceville Indiana reports Daniel Kidd Charlies Dewdney and Mrs Stockman saw a monster snake near twenty feet long and at least a foot thick. Old timers recall a similar serpent in 1840 near Hartman mill pond and fear it now terrorizes Ripley county Indiana. Davin Ky SkRaas of Allen Darke county Ohio was committed to asylum after threatening violence.
A public plea to the railroad commissioner urges immediate inspection of the C and E line trestles notes decayed timbers, weather damage, and risk to passengers. It argues for strict enforcement of Section 247 to halt unsafe passenger service until repairs are completed.
In the Stephen Feike versus C E R R matter, Judge Dean granted a motion to appoint John K Richards of Ironton as special Master Commissioner. Richards may subpoena witnesses, hire a stenographer, and hold hearings in Cincinnati Batavia Sardinia Winchester or Portsmouth. He must report in writing by October 1.
Kansas correspondent Barry Fitch describes a southwest trip to inspect timber and wildlife in a county along the western edge of the state. He notes dark rich loam soil, soft but nonpacking earth, and ongoing work by a Winfield capitalists group near the county seat Veteran.
