The terms specify two dollars per year in advance or within thirty days, two hundred fifty dollars if paid later within the year, and three dollars if delayed until the year ends. No paper is discontinued until arrears are paid, and failing to order discontinuance at the end of the subscribed period is a new engagement.

Advertising Terms and Rates for the Paper

Advertisements cost one dollar per square for the first three weeks and twenty five cents per square for each additional insertion. Yearly advertisers receive a liberal discount. Mark ads with the number of insertions or they will be continued until ordered out and charged accordingly. All communications must be post paid.

April 1839 journal aboard a Mississippi steamboat notes Randolph village on the Tennessee bank, deck life, and a veteran Miami pioneer Mr. B. from Portland, Maine. It recounts Buckeye births, a faithful dog guarding a corpse, deck versus cabin passage, and wooding scenes with farmers, plus dramatic fire and geological disturbances near Pottsville and the Broad Mountain, ending with a runaway infant incident aboard.

Ancient Wisconsin City Aztalan Unearthed In Rock River Valley

A Philadelphia Gazette piece details a discovered ancient city in Wisconsin near Rock or Crawfish river. Brick walls four to five feet high, about twelve feet thick at base, enclose a three mile irregular square with five large buildings and about fifty smaller ones. Boundary lengths are given, inscription names the city Aztalan. The article ponders who built it and when and whether Wisconsin once held a Hispaniola like mining region.

Unearthly Grave mound discovery alongside Louisville and Portland

Laborers digging the mound between Louisville and Portland uncover several graves about three feet deep. One grave contains near a dozen skulls and teeth with bones turning to ashes. A local elder recalls the mound from a poplar-covered past and suggests Choctaw burial customs, with heads and remains indicating ancient Indian interment.

How to Cure Botts in a Horse

Recipe from Maine Farmer advises treating botts in horses with milk to lure the pests, then feeding oats mixed with pulverized tobacco or tobacco infusion. It claims the tobacco mixture kills the botts within hours and prompts the horse to void them, warning against using this on older horses in cold weather.
