The Citizens' League of Chicago filed quo warranto proceedings on the 6th against Grand Pacific Hotel proprietor John B. Drake to challenge the city ordinance fixing saloon licenses at 103 dollars, testing it against the state law setting 500 dollars. The move aims to speed a ruling.
John L Sullivan of Boston defeated Herbert A Slade the Maori in a soft gloves boxing match at Madison Square Garden New York. Slade was knocked out in the third round before an audience estimated at 10000 to 12000 spectators.
A light vote was polled in Kentucky on the 6th with no drop in the Democratic majority. J Procter Knott's governorship lead is estimated around 45000. At Camden South Carolina a Baptist Church ice cream festival left fifty nine ill next morning with one child dead and two thirds still at risk. Two negroes and one woman were jailed on suspicion of attempting to poison the Daniel family of Spartanburg.
While digging a well five miles northwest of Yates Center Kansas on the Governor Dale farm, workers reached twenty feet and hit a large vein of silver ore. Specimens assayed as very rich. Several shafts are being sunk and claims are selling for 500 to 2000 dollars each.
Dolly Pollard and George Jeffries were arrested in Smithson, L. L., for the murder of a five year old child. Jeffries abused the child with a belt and buckle, blood and salt were involved, and a broken neck is suspected as the cause of death. Dolly Pollard claims she is Jeffries wife and could not stop the cruelty.
General Robertson father of Lieutenant Robertson of the 1st Cavalry is satisfied by telegraphic reports from his son confirming the integrity of the lieutenant. He has written to the War Department requesting resolution of the pay accounts issue and that the matter be rectified.
The father requests the charges already preferred be drawn up, arguing that public attention surrounding the case necessitates a Court Martial verdict to deliver complete justice for his son.
W C and RM Silsby of Troy New Hampshire fail on the 7th due to Hersey Whittier and Wyman of Boston. E H McClure of Peabody Massachusetts also fails. Wright Wooster and Co of Boston, prominent wool dealers, assigned all property to an employee Lester Run. Liabilities are not yet known but expected heavy. The firm’s credit had been strong and values placed between 100000 and 150000 dollars. The trade is surprised by the developments.
In Shenandoah Pennsylvania a fourteen year old girl Mary Dalton was burning by a stove. Her mother and sister Maggie tried to help but their clothing caught fire. Neighbors arrived and extinguished the flames leaving all three badly burned with Mary unlikely to recover.

William Tannthill eighteen working for Hubert Hartmann four miles south of Belleville Lil enticed Minnie Hartmann twelve a farmer's niece to an outhouse where he assaulted her and fled. The girl was found badly bruised and suffered convulsions all night with little hope of recovery. Citizens hunt for Tannihill.
Advices from Ekaterina Slave report demonstrations against Jews on the 2d and 3d insts. Three sotnias of Cossacks arrived to preserve order. Eighteen of 100 arrested protesters face military tribunal. Many wounded are dead, and no Jews were injured as they escaped with warning.
A violent hailstorm struck Nishnatoba Valley near Des Moines and Odeboldt on the night of the 8th. The storm path was four miles wide with hail up to five feet deep in places, destroying crops and farm property. Mrs. Lawson was killed and another person wounded. Losses likely exceed half a million dollars.
In Grand Rapids Michigan a railroad conductor awaiting a second burglars visit fired upon his wife believing her to be an intruder. The shot entered her forehead and exited near the right ear causing a wound she cannot recover from.
In Pittsburg a warehouse mishap at Hussey, Howe & Co. caused two hundred tons of manufactured steel to fall from racks crushing Charles Eichner and seriously injuring five others. The end of the warehouse was torn away and a railroad train was toppled and buried in debris.
The recalc y discovered cave at Lookout Mountain base opens at low water near Chattanooga Tenn. A very large lake was found inside. A sail 159 feet high discharged its waters with thunder like noise. Several waterfalls and other striking phenomena were observed.
For weeks Syracuse Common Council banned Salvation Army street parades. On the evening of the 9th the army marched through the streets shouting Hallelujah and singing tunes to popular airs. Police arrested the group and took them to the station. an Alderman who opposed the ban signed bail bonds.
Reports detail Samuel Mcioney, a hermit, shooting his father in Salina Station, Pa., with his mother and sister present. he fled as sheriffs pursue. At Port Royal, Pa., distiller John P. Moss fatally wounds James McGrogan. Chattanooga man Thomas Jones dies after taking laudanum amid personal crisis. Baltimore County lawyer L L Conkaple shot by his wife near Glydon. wife ill and mentally troubled. Conkaple was New Orleans born, son of Hon. Wm. H. Conrad.
Secretary of War notes W M Beene died from an overdose of laddanum during personal crisis in a Washington tent. He formerly commanded the One Hundred Twenty eighth Colored Troops as lieutenant colonel. Beebe led the Arctic relief expedition last year. Kiine, a painter at Sherwood Wakeman’s wagon factory in Centralia Illinois, set the building aflame with turpentine and then killed himself by shooting.
A Liverpool dispatch reports James McDermott arrived on the 7th from America and was remanded to jail on charges of conspiracy to murder public officials. He was arrested aboard the City of Montreal, originating in America. A Cork warrant tied him to O Herlihy, with letters to O Donovan Rossa and James Stephens found on him.
In the Brussels trial Canon Bernard stands accused of abstracting papers and securities worth millions of francs from the Episcopal palace of the Diocese of Tournay. Defense argues he possessed a papal document authorizing concealment and claims he was scapegoated for Bishop Rousseaux.
