A grim report describes five persons suffering death amid a rotten trestle disaster. The piece laments the horrors and hopes the grand jury will pursue new indictments amid the bloody wreck and national unrest.
A Batavia Junction mixed train bound for New Richmond derailed on a rotten trestle at Nine Mile, killing eight passengers and injuring many. Rescue efforts were led by local residents including the Gaskins brothers. among the dead were Mrs. Arthur Donaldson and two of her sons, with several others critically hurt. The disaster prompted calls for accountability and railway reform as investigators and physicians tended the wounded.
Jacob Clark and other turnpike managers sued to release one year's taxes after five years unpaid. Auditors sought $3,500 in back taxes for 1880. Board refused, insisting turnpikes pay like farmers and merchants to support public needs. Public support for the auditors' stance expected.
A string of crashes plagues the Cincinnati & Eastern with a White Oak trestle failure injuring engineer Mr. King and a fireman, an express from Portsmouth derailed near Winchester delaying trains six hours, and a Hillsboro branch wreck leaving only one engine in service. Batavia cut off from outside communication for three hours by telegraph, rail, and mail.
