Amelia High School prepares a detailed program for Class Night. The event features prophecies, a class play Under Blue Skies, numerous characters, and musical tableaux including The Ten Virgins.
John Naylor, West Union's oldest resident, died at home Sunday after a long illness. Born November 2, 1828 on Gift Ridge Monroe township, he was 93 years five months old. Funeral Tuesday at his residence led by Rev. R L King, burial in Odd Fellows cemetery. Civil War veteran and father of Fee Naylor attended with family.
The G or P Railroad Company offers land near its Highland Park power house to employees. Previously grass and a baseball diamond the area is to be plowed and planted with garden rock to curb rising daily expenses. A petition signed by section men seeks an advance deemed necessary.
Miss Anna G Mott of Amelia and William Edward Ramsay of Winchester married at the Mott home in Amelia on Saturday noon in a ceremony led by Rev A E Huntington. The couple leaves for Huntington West Virginia and eastern points after receiving guests and gifts of cut glass silver and linen. Attendants included Grace Underwood and Bryan Ramsay, with a large list of attendees from Amelia Winchester and surrounding towns.
Hamilton county undertakes a re appraisal of real estate as prices have risen and the tax duplicate reflects higher values. Batavia town lots once $300 to $400 cannot fetch those amounts now and some farm lands cost less than appraisement. Clermont county will have no re appraisal this year.
Batavia township schools closed last Friday after an eight month term with praise for the commendable exercises. Attendance was good and interest above average, and the teachers and superintendent are to be congratulated on the record.
Officials warn that not every pupil in the graduating class may graduate after final exams. Schools must verify exam results before listing names on announcements to avoid embarrassment for students and parents.
State authorities request cultivation of all vacant Ohio lots this summer. They propose clearing the Batavia armory lot of dumped rubbish and using the space for productive farming. The aim is to improve appearance and raise crops on land owned by the state.
A correction note states Ruth Kain was omitted from the Batavia high school graduating class list published last week and is now added.
The Red Cross Society meeting at Batavia High School adopted by laws prepared by Judge Paxton and elected a board of directors led by Judge H L Nichols. The group plans committee work and training in First Aid. 100 members demonstrate local support for the effort.
The Moscow high school baseball team defeated Amelia in a home doubleheader last Wednesday, winning 4 to 1 in the opener and 8 to 2 in the second game. The teams were evenly matched.
The home of John Orth on Jackson pike burned Monday morning. The fire started in the roof away from a chimney, possibly caused by mice. Several outbuildings were also destroyed, with an estimated loss of about 3000.
Arch P. Waterfield of Felicity, widely known in the county, died at his Covington home on April 14 after a brief illness. He was the son of Mrs. M. I. Waterfield.
With the razing of the Jessie R. Grant house in Bethel, Clermont county loses a historic landmark once hosting many notable men. Few such landmarks remain in the county today.
The 98th anniversary of Hill District No. 64 I O F will be held in Goshen on Saturday April 28 at 10 a m. Program includes invocation by Rev T A Ballinger welcome by F B Bishop response by E B Holmes song trio and selections, dinner, business meeting at 1 p m, and songs with the Star Spangled Banner and God Be With You Till We Meet Again. Audience S B Meyers is president and C A Bishop secretary.
Ramus Henderson of Back Run was jailed Monday night on charges of stealing and selling two pigs, admitting the act. Henry and Blaze Stiles of New Richmond were also jailed the same evening for disturbing the peace, according to Deputy Sheriff Miller.
Clermont county reports nine organized Home Making Clubs across Bethel Williamsburg Milford Batavia Loveland Newtonsville Goshen Owensville New Richmond with 179 girls. Leaders, presidents and member counts listed, plus plans for eighteen food preservation lessons and summer demonstrations by a visiting Specialist. County Agricultural Agent invites more girls and teachers to organize clubs and receive entrance blanks.
In Williamsburg common pleas court Coleman and Pohl meat dealers faced damages claims over remarks about a cow butchered and meat sold. A large crowd attended as jurors debated through Friday and Saturday, but could not agree and were discharged after an overnight deliberation.
A well attended community meeting was held at Corner School House on Thursday evening. Speakers included County Agent Stowe on farming and food conditions, garden expert Vanderhoe from OSA, E. B. Holmes of Williamsburg with a patriotic speech, J. C. Fuhr on practical farming points, and Co. Supt. Aultman on teaching thrift to children. Dist. Supt. J. S. Rounds presided.
James Rose, a member of the I O O F lodge in Williamsburg, presented a 4 by 6 foot flag as a token of love and affection. The flag will brighten the lodge hall’s east end for years to come, reflecting Mr. Roses belief in Odd Fellowship and its teachings.
Inspectress Miss Nellie Jarman of Moscow led the O. EB. 8. Chapter inspection last Monday evening with good attendance. After the session refreshments were served and a number of visitors remained. Rev. Simpson and wife hosted Harold Marale of Winton Place as a Sunday guest.
Clermont County Board of Education will hold a teachers institute this year to replace the previous $10 allowance for active teachers. Noted: best instructors secured, week devoted to education improvement, venue and program to be announced. Batavia hopes to host, citing central location and good amenities.
Measles have taken possession of many children and some adults with over ten cases reported last week and no fatalities. A dark room and careful nursing will bring the patients through. Many school children are among the victims.
The 21st commencement for Moscow High School will be held at Jr O U A M hall on Saturday night in May. A class play titled The Varsity Coach will be presented. Graduates are Lew F Daley Albert Rice Bolendar and John G Hetrick. The baccalaureate sermon is planned for Sunday evening April 29 at Church of Christ with Rev Harding of Dayton officiating. The Seyler Bros near Batavia atop the Red Bridge place a 46-foot flagstaff on a high point behind their home. An eight-foot flag flies to the breeze and is visible for miles. The town also notes many patriotic German farmers as progressive members of the community.
At a special county commissioners meeting on April 19 the auditor advised no re appraisal of county real estate. Bids for Bethel and Concord pike south end: Mc Clusky White 2014. W Meek 1478 awarded to Meek. East end pike awarded to G P Medary at 1890. Henry A Hodge vs W S Shane compromised with $75 damages plus costs and bridge construction.
Mr and Mrs S M Cover of Maywood entertained about 150 friends with a Saturday evening shower for their son Nate and Miss Bertha Miller of Twin Bridges who were to be married. Guests visited and danced, many useful gifts were received, and refreshments were served.
Mrs R D Sapp of Baldwin slipped during chores on April 15 and dislocated her shoulder. She is reported to be getting along nicely.
A letter notes the disappearance of car horns amid growing motor use and asks whether horns are being removed to bypass village rules or drivers have mastered silent driving. It warns pedestrians risk as signals vanish and many vehicles crowd the roads.
Miss Nettie Mitchel hosted the Deerfield club on Thursday evening with roll call on disliked house work. Mrs Slade led a program on summer house work and furs care followed by songs. Mrs Patterson spoke on Restlessness of the Modern Woman and a reading by Mrs McAfee. Refreshments served. Next meeting May 17 at Mrs Patterson's.
Williams burg Grange met with nearly 100 members and visitors from Cecelia and Marathon granges. Five new members received the 1st and 2nd degrees under T. A. Pinkham of Cecelia Grange. A literary program featured The Cloverdale Sewing Circle performed by 12 women in grotesque costumes. Another class of candidates is expected soon.
Amelia Grange hosts an open meeting Friday April 26 at 7:80 PM replacing the regular Saturday session. The patriotic event invites all, urging members to bring neighbors and friends. Readings, music, speakers will address vital issues and attendees are asked to wear or carry a flag.
A Clermont County Schools notice urges teachers to mobilize pupils for the home front. Students should produce saleable goods this summer such as produce or livestock and save earnings, fostering thrift and patriotism as the county reports 1000 enlistees so far.
