Railway rate legislation opposed by conductors at Portland convention
At the biennial Order of Railway Conductors meeting in Portland Oregon they unanimously endorsed President Roosevelts stand against secret rebates and urged Congress to avoid sweeping rate regulation. They warned centralized control could lower rates unfairly, harm railroads and impede justice, noting freight costs remain a small share of consumer prices while American management built national expansion. A Calcutta paper cites unhealthy climate as local context.
