In Union County New Mexico 1916 a Citizen newspaper attack warns taxpayers about unlawful charges for delinquent tax publications. It argues the district attorney opposes overbroad advertising costs and urges readers to reject jimmycratic officials while promising more coverage next week.
The county GOP met at 2 PM to hear Holm Bursum for governor, W. E. Lindsey for lieutenant governor, and J. H. Wagner for state superintendent. Bursum urged road and education reforms, supported equal suffrage, and earned loud applause.
The list names candidates for vice president Charles Fairbanks and presidential electors including C. L. Hill and Juan Ortiz among others. It also details nominees for U S Senator Frank A Hussell, Congressmen B C Hernandez, Attorney General Frank W Clancy, Governor Holm O Bursum, and other state and local posts with several county level race names such as Morris Johnson and Manuel Martinez.
A lengthy tirade questions the Clayton Citizen and Swastika's reporting on county printing and delinquent tax lists. It accuses the Citizen of suppressing facts and mocks Oklahoma columnist Oswald, urging readers to demand full disclosure of printing costs and bids in Union and Colfax counties.
Don Malaquias Baca and Don Hurracio Gallegos spent much of the week in the city attending to business matters and escorted Hon. Holme Bursum, gubernatorial candidate, and Prof. J. H. Wagner, state school superintendent candidate from Mosquero. Democrats denounce a personal attack on Judge Toombs at the convention as an old story, with party unity noted.
