A Gulfport resident recalls a recurring hurricane cycle with near misses and a usual pre storm routine. This time power stayed on, delaying the expected blackout and post storm vigil at O Mad dys bar as neighbors feared what lay ahead.
In Vermilion Ohio a man Michael Joseph Krupienski 71 called 911 to say his wife Marie Krupienski 81 shot herself at their home after he handed her a loaded revolver. She died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He is charged with reckless homicide a third degree felony and jailed with no bond. Arraignment scheduled Tuesday morning. Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Lucas County Coroner involved. 988 crisis line noted.
The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument was dedicated at the old Lorain County Courthouse as hundreds gathered with public officials and Gold Star families. The Woody Williams Foundation partnered with local families, including Kimberly Hazelgrove, widow of Brian Hazelgrove who died in Iraq in 2004, to realize the project. Hazelgrove spoke of recognizing sacrifices and supporting each other through grief.
In Lorain, St John’s United Church of Christ held its final service Sunday, ending 144 years of worship at the West Seventh Street and Reid Avenue site. Rev. David Rogers cites dwindling funds and an aging congregation as the reason for closure, despite a history of weddings, funerals, and resilience after the 1924 tornado.
Lorain man Jesse Fisk 47 of Dallas Avenue is charged with murder for the Sept. 18 stabbing death of Jyrone Tucker 53 of West 22nd Street Lorain. Fisk’s lawyer says the act was self defense and police details were not released.
Gulfport awoke to rain dwindling to drizzle as Hurricane Helene left eight foot waves and extensive damage downtown. National Guard patrols, shut roads, and scenes of wrecked shops and bars painted a town stunned by its worst disaster in over a century. Mayor Sam Henderson described the destruction as like a bulldozer tearing through.
