Rescue teams recovered 31 dead or dying on Mount Ontake after a sudden eruption that trapped hikers on Honshu. Authorities described 27 as suffering heart and lung failure, with four confirmed dead and others injured or missing. Helicopters plucked survivors as the Self-Defense Force deployed 250 troops and seven choppers to the ash-covered slopes.
