The United Nations weapons inspectors reach a settlement with Iraq ending a four day standoff. Iraq will allow the inspectors to keep key nuclear documents and prepare to leave a Baghdad parking lot where they were detained. David Kay says the entrance to the lot was unblocked and the team is free to depart, with departure to wait until morning.
Fifteen year old Rebecca Fisher of Oberlin played Bach for famed violinist Isaac Stern in Cleveland. Stern praised her technique saying she uses her body well and must follow through like an athlete to coax beautiful sounds from the violin.
In Carlisle Township, Pinter aged 18 and Wright aged 19 died from smoke inhalation when a cabin fire broke out after Wright's birthday celebration. The bodies were found close to an outside exit near the back door as survivors, including Raymond Klan Clarence Herb Bennett Janine Yovan and Anthony Gondor, recover from burns.
Lorain County Common Pleas Court Judge Lynett McGough suspended the remaining 2 to 10 year sentence of Michael Montecalvo and placed him on three years of supervised probation. The release date is set for on or after October 4 as reflected in the court order. The decision followed the governor George Voinovich's rejection of clemency or sentence reduction.
