Ivory-billed Woodpecker Quest Captures Student's Summer
Oberlin College junior Peter Riggs spent three months across eight states tracking sightings of the ivory-billed woodpecker, collecting more than 70 stories and 10 documented sightings while exploring folklore around the extinct bird. He interviewed 75 people and noted the quest shaped his view of obsession, then served as WOBC station manager at school. He plans to continue field work in Virginia and other southern states.

Oberlin College will sponsor a national conference on the education of black Americans from October 7 to 9. Noted attendees include U.S. Court of Appeals Judge A Leon Higginbotham and ex-Civil Rights Commissioner Mary Berry. A recital by Alyce LeBlanc and a lecture by William Hooper Jr. are among free events. An exhibition on Contemporary Afro-American Photography runs October through November at the Allen Memorial Art Museum.
