Banks cut prime rate across major institutions
New York banks and others lowered their prime lending rates citing softer market conditions. Citibank Chase Manhattan Manufacturers Hanover and Chemical Bank trimmed to 12 75 percent from 13 percent while Wells Fargo reduced to 12 5 percent and Morgan Guaranty moved to 12 75 percent. A few banks followed with similar moves and the term prime is explained as a reference rate for short term loans.
