Oberlin Graduates Share China Impressions
Oberlin College alumni Joe Hamilton and Dick Irwin returned from two years with Oberlin-in-China to report hopes, methods, and daily life in rural China. Hamilton said East and West share joys and sorrows, while Chinese students pursue national progress by developing resources and studying Western naval and military models. Irwin described a hut, noodles, and a social diet of fried eggs and prunes, noting low interior living standards and the role of education to raise living standards through farming, seed selection, cattle breeding, and higher industry. Irwin also taught in a Peiping boys school after leaving Shansi Taiku Province where Oberlin education aims to lift China by its own bootstraps.
