Riot at Lincoln shrine leaves one dead in Illinois coal dispute
In Springfield Illinois a riot between miners factions near the Leland Hotel left one man dead and about 20 injured. Detective Sergeant Porter Williams 45 was killed as 1100 miners fought with revolvers knives and clubs. Police arrested 24 United Mine Workers of America members on inciting riot charges. Garnett Smith of Herrin was charged with Williams's slaying. The conflict stems from wage scale disputes between the United Mine Workers and the Progressive Miners Union. Gas bombs were used to quell the violence and several bystanders were hurt.

A 22 caliber rifle shot nearly hit Martin Jackson, 15, while delivering papers in Oberlin. Wendell Seames, 34, of Oberlin, was arraigned and sentenced to the Toledo hospital for the insane. He had been an inmate of an insane institution. Jackson was taken to Oberlin Hospital in stable condition. Neighbors said Seames had previously fired at someone but was excused.
