ODOT weighs funding gap as bridges and roads age
Proctor noted a tradeoff in maintaining a major new construction program while aging infrastructure demands more investment. ODOT's pavement rating shows 37.5 percent good or very good, 23.92 percent fair, 14.75 percent fair to poor, 3.71 percent poor, and 0.12 percent very poor, with an overall 76/100 for multilane roads. The agency spends 90 percent to maintain existing roads and 20 percent on new construction, and 8 percent of spans are poor to failed, a figure stable over a decade. Interstate bridges built 40 years ago will need rehabilitation or replacement, exceeding current funding.

Council debates Route 252 over Clague relocation plan
North Olmsted and Westlake favor routing Route 252 to link interchanges on I 90 and I 490, displacing only a few homes. County plan costs 7.6 million to relocate Clague Road while rerouting north of Esther Avenue, with a residential cul de sac near Lorain Road. Residents petition in support of Boyle's alternative to extend Great Northern Boulevard toward Rose Road.

Truancy program to target nonattenders in district
A district truancy initiative will have a security officer follow up each case to ensure attendance. Parents may be charged with delinquency by truancy under state law if the problem persists, carrying up to six months in jail. Community members including store owners and fast food restaurants will help identify students skipping school. School board member Shirley Hawk urged residents to stop youngsters on the street and question their absence. The Cleveland program mirrors a Cincinnati model that began last year, where four weeks into the school year two truancy sweeps netted about 90 youths, with officials noting attendance improvement from the policy.
