Expel Myers: House committee backs expulsion demand
The House Standards Committee voted 10 to 2 to recommend expulsion for Rep. Michael Myers after FBI videotapes showed him taking $50,000 and boasting of influence. If approved by the House, he would be the first expelled member since the Civil War. The panel cited bribe-taking in the Abscam case and called for swift action. Myers’ counsel argued the FBI operation tainted the case and urged censure instead.

Psychiatrist testifies Jenrette had alcoholism in bribery case
A Bethesda Naval Hospital expert testified Rep. John Jenrette faced an acute alcoholism problem in March as his trial on bribery and conspiracy continued. The defense contends Jenrette was drinking and unaware during undercover discussions, while prosecutors face a case involving a $50,000 bribe for an immigration bill. Dr. George NeGron described Jenrette as “John the drunk” during treatment and outlined typical alcoholism symptoms observed in the congressman.
