Elyria East Tech and Midview posted strong showings as Wellington Amherst and Oberlin competed with Keystone South Amherst Black River South Central and other schools. Details and full results appear on pages 12 through 15.
President Nixon departs Andrews AFB with his wife for Montana Oregon and Washington en route to Alaska where he will meet Emperor Hirohito at Elmendorf AFB. The trip aims to heal tensions over the new economic program and ease political strains with former Interior Secretary Hickel.
Former Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black, 85, died at 1 a.m. EDT in Bethesda Naval Hospital eight days after resigning from the bench due to ill health. Death cited as inflammation of the arteries and a stroke. Black served 34 years on the court and was known for a strict interpretation of the Bill of Rights. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.
Pleasant weather features a high in the mid to upper 60s with increasing clouds and a small chance of showers tomorrow. Tonight and tomorrow bring rising chances of precipitation up to 50 percent as winds shift from light to southeast and south. The Senate Finance Committee narrowly approved an $800 million tax package including a 1.5 cent sales tax rise in a Saturday session. The 5-4 vote trimmed $20 million from appropriations and dropped extending the tax to auto repairs. Governor Gilligan criticized the move as preserving inequitable tax policy.
An architect’s rendering shows Lorain’s future City Hall with brown brick and white precast exterior and extensive tinted glass. The design includes a City Administration Building with offices and council chambers, a multi-story Police Courts Building, and a total price tag of 5 million dollars not counting furnishings. Construction is slated to begin in early spring after plans are finalized.
In Oberlin Ohio university leaders and local officials say the 26th Amendment would yield little impact on city governance. Even if eligible to vote Oberlin College students face residency rules and apathy with enrollment outstripping registered voters 2615 to 2055. Concerns over student voting campaigns and office runs are noted, but campus figures describe a return to political inactivity after a tumultuous 1960s.
