Gambling tickets frame-up claim from fired Lorain officer
Lorain patrolman Kenneth Kuzela, 20, dismissed today after gambling tickets and $332 were found in his trunk, says fellow officers framed him. Kuzela denies car trunk was open and knowledge of the tickets, alleging a force-wide vendetta and a meeting to “Get” him.

Avon Boy Killed After Crossing Street in Avon
Five year old Kenneth VanDemark died from head and chest injuries after being struck by a car while crossing the road with his brother and another child. Police say skid marks show the car, driven by William Kopp, was within speed limits. no charges filed. Kenneth, a first grader at Avon Elementary, would have turned six in October.

Families sue FAA over fatal Lake Erie sky dive
In Cleveland, families of 11 of 16 skydivers killed when jumping into Lake Erie off Huron on August 2 filed $3.18 million in federal lawsuits against the Federal Aviation Administration. They accuse a controller Engel Smit of negligent and incorrect guidance to the jump plane. A prior $2.7 million claim had been filed in March, with a $75,000 addition in May. The plane was a converted B 25 piloted by Robert Karns of Vermilion. Karns testified he believed he was over an airfield near Wakeman, 10 miles from the lake, when the jump occurred. The NTSB blamed the Oberlin FAA tower controller for the deaths after a hearing in Oberlin. Karns and others have appealed to hold the FAA responsible for the jump signal.

UPI reports an Air Force KC 135 Stratotanker with 36 aboard crashed during an emergency landing at Wake Island. Eleven dead all Air Force personnel, 23 injured, 14 airlifted to Guam. Plane en route from Anderson AFB Guam to the United States after engine trouble. Names withheld pending relatives notification. An accident investigation team headed to the scene.

Marine Lance Cpl. Coon dies of wounds in Vietnam
Lance Corporal C. Coon, 19, died of fragment wounds from an enemy mine near Quang Nam Vietnam while serving with the Marines. He had arrived in Vietnam last December and was wounded three weeks later. Parents Mr and Mrs Marvin Workman were notified by Marine officers. Two high school friends Dennis Sines and Dale Grasse enlisted after graduation from Midview High School in 1987.
