NYPD Moroccan Initiative surveilled daily life of immigrants

Investigative documents show NYPD built an intelligence database tracking where Moroccans ate, prayed, shopped and lived. The program, described as starting with Moroccans and expanding to other ethnicities, used undercover photos of daily routines to aid potential terrorism leads. Officials say the aim was to map immigrant life while critics call it invasive policing. The project reportedly drew CIA support and continued under multiple administrations, with unclear current status.
