Bomb explodes near Iraq UN HQ in Baghdad
A bomber with a car packed with 50 pounds of TNT detonated at a police checkpoint outside the Canal Hotel complex in Baghdad, killing an Iraqi policeman and wounding 19. The blast, heard across the capital, followed a month after a truck bomb killed 23 people at the U.N. compound. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan condemned the attack and warned that operations in Iraq could be handicapped. U.S. and Iraqi police praised security measures that prevented a larger tragedy as President Bush prepared to address the U.N. General Assembly.
