Luggage from Home to Camp Reveals Hidden Histories
The 1942 suitcase exhibit at the Japanese-American Museum of San Jose uses six actual suitcases from internees to reveal life in World War II camps. Curator Jimi Yamaichi recreates Tule Lake barracks, and guests see items from Eiichi Sakauye and five others, including a pocketknife, a violin, and wedding dress notes. The project, funded by the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, invites questions and further research about the internees and their trauma.
