Sandinistas defend Esteli as city smolders amid assault
In Esteli Nicaragua Sandinista guerrillas fight to hold the last stronghold on day 13 of a battle that has leveled much of the city and left officials counting casualties in the hundreds. Government tanks planes and artillery press the defenders while four other former Sandinista cities have fallen to the National Guard. Civilian deaths and devastated neighborhoods are reported as the siege continues with no official casualty tally.
