Depressing data on Lorain County wages and jobs
Lorain County and Ohio show a mixed recession picture as Census data reveal job losses halted but wage declines persist. Former Republic Engineered Products worker Norm Denger recalls abrupt 28 year tenure ending with no severance as about 750 coworkers faced layoff. Economic researcher George Zeller notes earnings drops despite stabilized employment.
Ohio households still struggle after recession end
Three years after the longest recession since the Great, many in Ohio remain jobless or underpaid. Census data show Ohio median household income at 45,739 last year, down 17.2 percent from 1999 after inflation. Lorain and Medina counties fared worse with declines over 20 percent. George Zeller notes job scarcity is less about finding work and more about pay. He says Ohio has stopped losing jobs, but the impact lingers.
