Mertz plans back five deputies after sickout
Lorain County Sheriff James A Mertz announced a plan to restore five laid off deputies by drafting waivers and offering compensatory time. About 85 percent of department employees ended a sickout after a 3 pm meeting. The move comes as county officials review funding. The sheriff also warned deputies violating union terms could face action while a letter to the Lorain County Deputies Association cited contract rules. Robert J. Hammond said the stoppage was not a union action and the group returned to work to seek a resolution.

Northeast Ohio Leaders Debate Ties Future to Regional Strengths
Governor Celeste addresses about 150 leaders during Northeast Ohio in the 1990s Options and Strategies meeting. He emphasizes cooperation among government business and labor to boost the region’s water resources and skilled workforce while warning that repealing state tax increases could force 20 percent service cuts impacting education. The discussion also notes a threatened sale of the Cleveland Indians following Fr. ONeill’s death, with ONeill’s nephew Patrick J. ONeill seeking offers possibly relocating the franchise.
