Slow-motion floods threaten Dominican Republic and Haiti
Lake Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic has doubled in size over eight years, flooding 16 communities and 46 500 acres of farmland. Lake Azuei in Haiti swelled similarly, disrupting a cross border highway and farms. The two lakes are three miles apart and fed by common streams. The rise accelerated after 2007 2008 rains and Tropical Storm Isaac. Causes range from sediment buildup to climate change. Some 10 000 families have lost cattle farmland or homes.
