Mayor James J. HtL said LaPorte may purchase Elyria water after East Carlisle Improvement Association applied to buy water and lay mains along Grafton Road to La Porte and Butternut Ridge Road. The association with twenty five members plans further discussions at a meeting.

Oberlin Road Widening Underway In City Project

Oberlin Road widening began this morning for a segment from West Avenue extending west about 129 to 590 feet. John S. Erdt, director of public service and safety, said Massey and Woodford Avenues work is progressing, with rapid progress on the Eighteenth Street storm sewer project. The 30 inch and 24 inch water mains on West Avenue are nearly finished and digging has started on Sixteenth Street.

Only Boys Will Lead Cheers This Year

Elyria High plans an all male cheer squad for this year after the athletic board voted to remove girls from the team. The squad size drops from five to three and students will elect the trio from six boys nominated by the board who competed at this morning’s assembly.

Explosion at River Herbert Victoria Mine Kills Seven

An explosion at the Victoria Mine interior near River Herbert traps miners, with at least seven dead and three bodies recovered. Thirteen escaped workers later reentered to assist in a rescue, as families gather at the mine entrance and Henry White, a former miner, retrieves his son William's body.

Girl Hops Off At San Diego For New York

Boulder Dam Construction Under Way In Nevada Desert

The first unit of Boulder Dam began construction today after an official nationwide ceremony led by Secretary Wilbur. The site, seven miles south of Boulder City, Nevada, hosts the $165,000,000 water and power project as work starts in a wild desert area.

Two Youths Held for Holdup in Lorain County

Federal authorities were to be notified today after two youths were arrested in Bemidji Minnesota for a Labor Day night holdup and robbery on the Lake road west of Lorain. They held up three Clevelanders, took about 12 dollars, and stole a new Ford with the bill of sale in the rear. The victims Frank Lase and Martin Vergolino reported the crime to Lorain police. Sheriff Clarence E Adams said the suspects were likely to be transported to Ohio for trial after being brought across several states.

Coast Guard searches for missing South Coast after schooner vanishes

The steam schooner South Coast with about 18 men aboard, traveling from Crescent City to Coos Bay, disappeared off Cane Bianco Oregon. A deck house, oar boat and logs were sighted north of the area while weather stayed calm. Cahokia headed to the last known position as Hobdu-Wall Co officials investigated the loss of the 1887 wooden schooner weighing 501 tons and 151 feet long under Captain Stanley Sorenson.

Cleveland Ohio September tests are under way by Clifford Ball Airlines on a mail plane with automatic controls. Pilot Ed Couples completed a first air mail run from Pittsburgh to Cleveland in a self guiding plane. The Guardiansire automatic control, invented by Otto Green of Elmira New York, functioned perfectly, with the aircraft following its course without pilot aid. Joe Martin, operations manager for Clifford Ball, said officials were pleased with preliminary tests.

Lorain youths accused in attempt to extort protection money

Two Lorain youths were held by county authorities after allegedly trying to extort 200 dollars from a Lorain woman by promising protection from Sheriff Clarence E. Adams for one year. The woman, known as Mrs. Check, notified Adams after the incident.

Four Lorain County men sentenced to Mansfield reformatory over the past five years will be among 153 inmates to be released on parole in the next two months. Schibley Seeks Parole From Ohio Penitentiary

William H. Schibler former Amherst Savings Bank president appeared before the Ohio Board of Clemency seeking parole from the Ohio Penitentiary where he began serving a one to 30 year term for misapplication of bank funds. He said an agricultural job awaited him in Ashland if released and termed the bank funds transfer to U S Automatic Corp Amherst a mistake in judgment for which he was willing to be punished. The board took the case under advisement.

Ruth Alexander Record Holder Dies In Plane Crash

Ruth Alexander, 20, a noted San Diego aviatrix, was killed at Lama Portal near San Diego after taking off for New York. Her monoplane crashed in a residential area as observers heard the impact and alerted Lindbergh Field officials. Authorities from the Department of Commerce and Coroner’s office investigated. the body lay at an undertaker's pending inquest.

Legion Is Short 1700 For Trip To Boston

Elyria officials and the mayor urge funding to send the Elyma American Legion Drum and Bugle corps to Boston for the national convention. A benefit football game was held at Ely Stadium last Friday but about 1700 remains needed. The mayor hopes Elynia’s team can compete and asked donors to send checks to the mayor’s office. The corps plans to depart in two weeks if funds are raised.
