Interest in tariff fades as senate receives few petitions
Washington Sept 18 The country shows little interest in the proposed tariff increase as the 600 million Republican bill is debated in the Senate with only six petitions received in two weeks. Groups endorsing and opposing various provisions appear, including labor, farm organizations, a Tampa cigar group, and the New Iberia chamber which backs the sugar rise. A Western states bloc is forming to back tariff protection for their region. The McMaster resolution, pending on the floor, asks the tariff commission for all production cost data used to justify rates.
