Otis Nixon, former Cleveland Indian outfielder now with the Atlanta Braves, is suspended 60 days by Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent for violating the sport’s drug policy. Nixon previously rehabbed with Cleveland in 1987.

Elyria City Council approved the Invacare abatement and income tax sharing plan 10 to 1, to aid moving manufacturing to North Ridgeville and cushion Elyria. North Ridgeville Council failed to muster enough votes to approve two related ordinances, delaying final. Mayor Armbruster scheduled a special meeting for Friday to reconsider, with former ally William Gardner absent on business. Invacare, Elyria’s largest employer, plans to relocate production from Cleveland Street to Taylor Parkway in North Ridgeville.
Cheryl Cusumano sobbed as she described life after her mother's death at the hands of ex-boyfriend John Simko Jr. The rebuttal testimony came in the penalty phase of Simko's capital murder and kidnapping trial tied to the Aug 7 1990 incident at Clearview Elementary School.
The Ohio EPA says Elyria City Schools may have missed state and federal deadlines for notifying about asbestos removal work. An eight page preliminary report cites two possible violations in projects involving friable asbestos in a 16 square foot area. The EPA sent findings to school officials and health and transportation agencies.
William Carroll a deaf 23 year old from Elizabeth New Jersey traveling through Elyria on a layover was robbed at gunpoint behind a Lake Avenue grocery. He writes notes to communicate and said he wore a Walkman to appear hearing. Carroll works as a hairdresser for ABC soaps in New York and travels solo.
