Elyria holds its first Apple Festival in Ely Park starting at 2 p.m. Friday with the Elyria West High School band. CALLIOPES and other bands provide music as volunteers set up booths for cider, pies, beauty queen crowning, antique car displays, and a 6.2 mile jogger run.
President Reagan confirmed a three month deferral of 1982 cost-of-living increases for federal benefit recipients as part of a $16.3 billion budget-cutting package. The plan targets Social Security, military retirement, food stamps and black lung, and includes trimming the federal payroll by about 75,000 jobs and possible abolition of Energy and Education departments. Officials say the move saves roughly $5 billion in 1982 and $3.3 billion over three years, while avoiding Social Security sacrifices.
Lorain received four point six inches of rain from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. today, more than the rest of Lorain County this month. The downpour exceeded the thirty year September average of 2.88 inches. Businesses along Henderson Drive faced street and basement flooding with four inches of water in Donna Torres’s showroom at Lake Erie Upholstering Co. Water was removed by sump pump as workers described muddy conditions.
US District Judge Thomas D. Lambros heard arguments on converting indicted firms and executives from innocent pleas to no contest in a complex supermarket price fixing conspiracy. If granted, ruling by Oct 14 could end the case with sentencing. if denied, trial would start about 30 days after.
Elyria voters may see two binding arbitration items on the November ballot after Lorain County Board of Elections officials revisited a removal. The board restored the issue amid questions of charter city authority, with IAFF backing a charter amendment allowing binding arbitration in city employee contracts.
