Tax bill reshapes estate and gift taxes effects
Washington A P report outlines the 1976 tax bill changes. It would replace exemptions with a rising credit, boost spousal transfer relief, and curb shelters used by the wealthy. The plan lowers taxable estates, widens benefits for farm land, tightens capital gains rules, and expands the minimum tax to more high earners.
Tax bill veto seen unlikely in Ford era
Washington UPI reports Congress has produced a highly complex tax bill with popular new breaks that Ford is unlikely to veto. The measure raises taxes for some groups, expands child care and retirement credits, and curbs tax shelters across real estate farming and other industries. Vast changes passed 383 to 26 in the House and 84 to 2 in the Senate, with White House reviewing.

Episcopal women priests vote marks shift in church
The Episcopal Church approved women ordination with three million members backing the move amid a two hour debate in the House of Deputies. Delegates totaling about 1 000 and observers reacted with tears and quiet celebration as Rev Carter Heyward urged local bishops to regularize ordinations individually. The decision aligns the church with Canadian, Hong Kong and New Zealand Anglican bodies in embracing women priests while opponents argued the issue is theological, not civil rights.
