Sanctions tightened as UK and UN curb Iraq trade
London and New York tighten export controls over Iraq amid fears of forged licenses. Since June, the UK DTI requires proof of shipment to Iran for Iraq licenses, while the UN bans all but humanitarian goods unless approved by national authorities and the Sanctions Committee. The system shift reduced Iraq licenses by about one third and led firms with Iraqi links to halt applications. The UN also narrowed validity of approval letters to four months, tightening sanctions further.
