Lorain County election officers forecast a last minute surge as residents rush to register for the November presidential election. Early counts show 2,356 new registrations in Elyria with hundreds more awaiting tabulation and many changes of address.
Emergency crews mobilize for mass evacuation as Wake Island is leveled by a 138 mph typhoon. Navy reports 90 percent of facilities destroyed, communications down eight hours, 750 residents displaced. Evacuation planes prepared in Honolulu and Tokyo with runways damaged and crews awaiting sunrise. Pan American reports no injuries among its Wake personnel.
Iran Premier Mossadegh threatens to sever diplomatic ties with Britain over the oil dispute and blockades. The Majlis votes unanimous support for his stance and demands compensation, including $137.2 million allegedly owed by the Anglo Iranian Oil Company.
Republican leaders announce Senator Everett Dirksen of Illinois will address a noon Tuncheor relic of Republicans at the Elks Hall in Elyria on October 13. Dirksen plans 25 speeches nationwide in support of the GOP victory this November. Eisenhower will deliver a first historic stop speech in Lorain County with a special train stop at Wellington on September 23. Large crowds expected at the fairgrounds with ample parking and crowd control planned for up to 15 000 attendees.
