Miss America Pageant Turns 75 In American Tradition

Atlantic City marks 75th anniversary of Miss America as it evolves from a beach contest to a scholarship program. TV ties, volunteer network, and history of controversy shape the pageant, with contestants promoting platforms and debates over swimsuit competition.

Past winners cast swimsuit votes at Miss America pageant

The Atlantic City telecast invites viewers to vote yes or no on keeping swimsuits in the Miss America competition. Hillary Clinton declines to reveal her opinion, while past winners Heather Whitestone Kellye Cash and Kaye Lani Rae Rafko express varied views. Donna Axum supports swimsuits though she once competed in one. Pageant CEO Leonard Horn notes the question looms annually as the three hour show allows 900 number voting. If no wins, swimsuits could be eliminated though the board may reinstate next year.

Miss America Pageant Hosts Through the Years

The pageant has had four emcee teams since its first telecast in 1864. Regis Philbin and Kathie Lee Gifford hosted from 1991, succeeding Gary Collins who led for nine seasons with Mary Ann Mobley and Phyllis George. Collins followed Ron Ely in 1982, with Bert Parks hosting from the start until 1980 when he was dismissed after 25 years.
