Book ban backfires as reads rise in teens

Chicago AP notes banning books fuels curiosity among students. ALA reports 760 challenges in 1994, mainly in schools, aiming at sex and occult themes. Examples include Hans Christian Andersen and Howard Stern titles. A Greenville Middle School staffer recalls a challenged book later surging in popularity. Christopher Collier's My Brother Sam Is Dead also gained attention after challenges.

Des Moines school board race rocked by gay rights clash

Incumbent Jonathan Wilson finished fourth in a high turnout contest after revealing he is homosexual. Former teacher Jane Hein and Harold Sandahl won as critics from Concerned Parents of Des Moines led opposition to Wilson’s stance on adding sexual orientation to district curriculum. Wilson raised about $50,000, dwarfing Hein’s $6,700, with out‑of‑state groups and several Republican presidential hopefuls weighing in on the race.
