Ohio Supreme Court allows deferral of $7.6 billion refunds by Columbia Gas

In a split decision the Ohio Supreme Court granted Columbia Gas of Ohio a stay to defer $7.6 billion in customer refunds pending appeal. The refunds stem from PUCO findings the utility was imprudent purchasing winter gas in 1981 and passing costs to customers under the gas cost recovery clause. Justices Brown and Locher dissented on the stay, arguing it bails out utility mismanagement at consumers’ expense.
