Turnpike Builders Find Elvira Boulders Big Hard
Huge granite boulders in the Elvira sector of the Ohio Turnpike create excavation challenges between Gulf Ray and the Black River. Graders will remove the boulders by clawing them from the ground while a nearby rock bed is blasted and crushed for base fill. A power shovel operated by Glen Cross moves rock into waiting trucks, removing about two and a half cubic yards per cycle. Over 100,000 cubic yards must be shifted between Gulf Rd and West River Rd as part of 1,405,000 cubic yards in the Elyria sector. Section Continued On Page 8.
